Hillsdale Estates Family Council

What is a Family Council?

A Family Council is designed as a voluntary, self-governing group made up of families and friends of Long Term Care Home Residents. Our decision making process is self-led and democratic where we advocate for positive change and are driven by the goals of the council.

The Purpose of a Family Council

A Family Council is a group made up of families and friends of residents that come together to improve the quality of care and life of the facility's residents. The Family Council serves as an advocate for the residents, as well as a line of communication between the home and the families and friends.

What are the goals of a Family Council?

The goals and direction of a Family Council vary from home to home. Some examples of goals are:

  • To welcome and support new families and friends.
  • To serve in an advisory capacity to the home.
  • To provide educational opportunities and sponsorship activities.
  • To advocate on behalf of residents and families.
  • To share ideas, in an effort to problem solve.
  • To connect with other Family councils through networks.
